Blocks Rock! STEM Game

“This is fun!” are the words I’ve heard over and over again as my students play our new game Blocks Rock! With indoor recess all week, we received this game at the perfect time! Not only is it an engaging + competitive game, but it also activates brain development through structured block play without the students even knowing they are learning! Now that is a win-win in my book! 🙂

How to Play!

The game comes with a set of blocks for two players, a bell and two packs of game cards. Each player gets the same number of blocks to play the game.

The game is played by choosing a card with the structure to copy, building the structure out of colored blocks, and ringing the bell to end the round.

Accuracy is key, and a player only wins the round when the structure is completed successfully. At the end of the deck, the winner of the game is the player with the most cards or with the most points as indicated on each card. It is as simple as that!

My students even created their own version of the game so more than two students could play! Two players started the game. Whoever won that round got to play player number three. The player who won that round would play the next round and so on. It was fun to watch them problem solve how they could have more kiddos play the game! 🙂

How to Implement into the Classroom

This game creates a perfect activity for so many different times of the day! Students could play this game during a morning choice time, STEM time, math stations, indoor recess or as a brain break! It could even turn into a morning meeting game with different teams of students competing against each other! There are so many opportunities to place this fun game full of brain development in your classroom!

I’ll admit, I’ve even stayed in the classroom during indoor recess to get a little competitive play in with my students and have a little fun with them with this game! I am so excited to share this game with my students and will more than likely be ordering another!

Learning Benefits!

Not only is this game fun, but it provides a variety of learning benefits for all ages. Students need to identify colors, shapes and spatial recognition to match the card. It can be tricky for even my 3rd & 4th graders when they are trying to beat their opponent! Their critical STEM skills are tested and quick thinking skills are promoted through the process!

Along with all of that learning that goes on, students are also practicing their hand eye coordination as they build a block structure in the shortest amount of time!

Finally, social skills! Healthy competition is a hard lesson for kids to learn. This game provides kids a fun way to practice healthy competition with their peers. They not only compete, but also need to check each others’ block structures and decide who rings the bell first.
