Lunch Bunch

Distance learning is hard. I feel like I am working twice as hard to deliver content while still make connections with my students. The hardest part of it all….I don’t get to see my students face to face.

If you are anything like me, you are trying your hardest to continue the relationships in your classroom digitally. I wanted to share one thing I’ve been doing to not only help my students be successful but to help continue supporting them mentally and emotionally!

Lunch Bunch…they love it at school and they love it out of school! Lunch bunch has always been a favorite reward for my students. To eat lunch in the classroom with a few friends, their teacher + maybe a little dance party music! 🙂 It looks a little different online, but we are still enjoying it every little bit!

How it’s Worked For Me

I create a Sign-Up Genius for each day that I will be hosting a lunch bunch. I have kept it to 6 slots because with too many kids, it’s harder for them to talk + make sense of the crazy conversation. 🙂 Not all students want to eat lunch with their teacher + classmates at home so they don’t all sign up! But…the ones that need it, they sign up! 🙂

The day of the lunch I send out a reminder e-mail with the image below to remind them of the time + the Google Meets code we will be using!

Then we spend 30 minutes eating, chatting + laughing! Some activities my students have thought of during lunch bunch:

  • Would you Rathers – a student shared their book and we played a variety of scenarios
  • Pictionary – played with a student’s whiteboard that they had at home
  • “Guess the Sentence” – students type in a variety of Emojis in the chatbox. Then we guess what the sentence says
  • Trivia Questions
  • Jokes + Riddles
  • Just chatted, typed in a lot of random things in the chatbox + laughed

It isn’t meant to be educational or even directed by me. I let the students talk while I listen. If they are struggling having conversation I will prompt them with some ideas or thoughts! Grab the editable freebie below!
